Some landscapes just stop working. The plants get overgrown, the layout feels random, and the whole front of the house starts looking tired - even if the house itself is in great shape. That's exactly where this Pittsburgh home was before we got started. The existing landscaping had run its course, and the homeowner wanted something cleaner and more intentional to match the updated look of the home.
We tackled this in two phases. First, we stripped everything out - all of the old plantings, all of the overgrown beds. Starting from scratch is the only way to do a redesign like this the right way. You can't build something clean on top of something that wasn't working. Once we had a blank canvas, we could focus on grading the yard properly and planning out exactly where everything would go.
Phase two is where the landscape design really came together. We installed Oberfields Eddington blocks in Storm as the edging throughout - it's a clean, structured look that gives every bed a defined, finished edge. Inside the beds, we laid premium black granite decorative rock and planted fresh Boxwoods. The contrast between the dark rock and the greenery against the brick exterior of the home is sharp. The whole front foundation feels intentional now, not like an afterthought.
The yard grading was a big piece of this too. The front yard was regraded and reseeded, which addresses both the appearance and drainage. Uneven grades cause water to pool in the wrong spots and create long-term headaches - so getting that right before seeding is something we take seriously on every job like this. The side beds and rear areas got the same attention to detail with consistent block edging and rock throughout.
What you end up with is a property that actually matches the quality of the home. The updated siding, the black trim windows, the modern entrance - the landscape now fits that look instead of working against it. Good landscape design doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes clean lines, the right plants, and quality materials are all it takes to completely change how a home feels from the street.
