Here's what we were working with - a failing retaining wall out front that had seen better days. The old wall was shifting, the steps were deteriorating, and the whole area just wasn't functional or safe anymore. That kind of problem doesn't fix itself, and patching it wasn't the right answer. A full tear-out and rebuild was the only move that made sense long-term.

We went with Oberfields Standard Non-Weathered Versa-Lok block in Storm with charcoal caps for the new retaining wall. It's a tough, clean-looking material that holds up well over time. The Olentangy Bluff Tread steps tie right into it, and the wall's tiered layout gives the whole front of the property a structured, intentional look that the old setup never had. We also added a black aluminum handrail along the staircase - solid, sharp, and a genuine safety upgrade.

Up top, we built out a custom paver landing and patio using Lexington pavers in Storm, framed with Jamestown Border accents in Charcoal and Cream. The border detail is one of those things that takes a paver patio from ordinary to really well done. It gives the space a finished, built-for-this-house feel rather than just a generic slab dropped in front of the door.

Then there's the lighting. We installed Tru-Scapes RGB color-changing fixtures underneath the wall caps, and the difference at night is hard to overstate. Warm white for everyday use, or full color when you want something different - that flexibility is something homeowners genuinely love once they see it in action. It adds dimension to the wall and makes the whole front of the house look intentional after dark in a way that basic landscape lighting just can't match.

We wrapped everything up with regrading and fresh grass seeding to clean up the surrounding area. From a crumbling wall and broken-down steps to a fully built-out front entry with a paver landing, stone steps, and color-changing outdoor lighting - this one came a long way.
