When a retaining wall fails, it stops being just an eyesore pretty quickly. It becomes a real safety problem. That's exactly what we were dealing with here - a wall that had given up entirely, with rotted timber sections collapsing outward and soil spilling onto the patio below. The concrete was cracked, the old wooden wall was falling apart, and the whole area looked like it had been neglected for years.

The first step was a full tear-out. We removed the failed timber wall, pulled the broken concrete sections, and got the site properly excavated and graded before a single new block went down. This part matters more than most people realize. A retaining wall is only as good as its base - skip the prep work and you're just setting up the next failure.

For the new wall, we went with Oberfields Versa-Lok in Chestnut. It's a great product - engineered to handle serious soil pressure, and the textured face gives it a natural stone look that holds up well over time. We built it out in an L-shape to follow the existing yard layout, then graded the area behind it and brought in fresh soil to get everything leveled and ready for new grass seed.

What we ended up with is a wall that actually does its job - holds the slope back, protects the patio, and looks clean doing it. No more leaning. No more crumbling boards. Just a solid structure built the right way from the ground up. If your wall is showing signs of failure - bowing, cracking, or already coming apart - it's worth getting it looked at before the problem gets bigger and more expensive to fix.
